- Within the past decade, investigators have emphasized the contribution of weaknesses in higher-order cognitive functions (i.e., thinking and reasoning processes - memory) to the school failure of many learning-disabled children.
- Children with deficits in such "metacognitive" skills (i.e., being able to access acquired knowledge when needed, knowing how to apply learned skills)
- Unable to focus their attention on the salient features of tasks
- Cannot effectively devise strategies.
- Such children have been described as "passive" learners.
